Science
It's a question I genuinely enjoy answering, because most people don't realise there's a meaningful difference between a standard personal trainer and a coach who has spent years studying exercise science at an academic level.
Sport science is an applied academic discipline that draws from multiple fields to understand and optimise human physical performance. A Master's degree in sport science typically covers:
"A Level 3 PT qualification teaches you what to do. Five years of academic study teaches you why it works — and what to do when the standard answer doesn't apply to this particular person."
A standard PT certification covers the fundamentals of exercise prescription and client safety, and that's valuable. But it's a foundation, not a full education. The depth of physiological understanding, the ability to critically read research, and the skill to adapt programming based on how an individual's body actually responds — these come from sustained academic study.
Sport science is not reserved for elite athletes. The same principles that help professional athletes recover faster and stay injury-free apply directly to someone who wants to lose fat, build strength, or feel better in their body.
