Strength training for beginners in London

By Riccardo Pasquale, MSc Sport Scientist & Personal Trainer · Vauxhall, London SW8

If you've been doing cardio and not seeing the results you expected, this article is for you. Strength training is the most effective tool most beginners aren't using — and you don't need to be strong, experienced, or even confident in a gym to start.

Why strength training, not just cardio?

Cardio burns calories during the session. Strength training does something more valuable: it builds lean muscle mass, which raises your resting metabolic rate. That means you burn more calories every hour of every day — even when you're sitting at your desk or sleeping.

Research consistently shows that a combination of resistance training and moderate cardio produces better fat loss and body composition outcomes than cardio alone. The muscle you build also gives you shape and definition — the "toned" look most people are after comes from muscle, not endless hours on the treadmill.

The five movements every beginner should learn

You don't need to know 50 exercises. Start with these five fundamental movement patterns:

"The biggest mistake beginners make is going too heavy too soon. Start lighter than you think you need to, master the movement, then add load progressively. This is how you build a body that keeps improving for years."

How often should you train?

Two to three full-body sessions per week is ideal for beginners. This allows enough training stimulus to drive adaptation while giving your body adequate time to recover. You will see meaningful results from this frequency within 6–8 weeks.

Where to train in London

If you're in the Vauxhall, Nine Elms, Kennington, or Oval area, Southbank Club Gym is an excellent facility. Well-equipped, not overcrowded, and with space to train properly. Many of my clients also train at home or their residential gym with just a set of dumbbells and a mat — you don't need a full commercial gym to get started.
